Outside Machinist - Chesapeake, VA

Job Description The Outside Machinist will remove, repair, overhaul, install and align equipment associated with main propulsion and auxiliary systems such as condensers, compressors, pumps, various types of valves, cargo handling machinery, anchor handling gear, boat davits, cranes, elevators, conveyors, firefighting equipment, machine shop equipment, galley, and laundry equipment. Repair foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components of ship's armament. Install, adjust, set, and repair or replaces various control/regulating or safety devices such as meters, gages, valves, governors and automatic alarms. Test or assist in testing of shipboard machinery pier side or on sea trials to prove satisfactory operation and acceptance. Use various portable and fixed machine tools such as boring bars, milling machines, facing machines and drill presses. Use precision measuring instruments such as height gages, depth gages, calipers, veneirs, various types of micrometers, and assists in the use of optical equipment. Coordinate and arrange for the work of several trades in connection with performing work from information received from technical work documents, blueprints, specifications, written and/or oral instructions.

The Outside Machinist will receive technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher level technician, and work is reviewed for compliance with accepted practices. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a supervisor.
Work is performed onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations requiring the ability to work in areas with drafts, noise, and temperature variation. Must be able to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in kneeling position for layout of cable runs under false decking, lift up to 50 pounds with 80% of work requiring carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 40 pounds for majority of shift while being in a standing, crouching, or walking position. Attention to safety critical.
Required Skills Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 8-10 years of related field experience Applicant must be willing to work second or thirds shift as needed. Applicants also must be willing to work more than 40 hours work weeks. Applicants must successfully undergo a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation This position supports a U.S. Government Contract whose terms require Serco to staff it only with U.S. Citizens Travel may be required. Applicant must be willing to travel to various work sites such as Virginia Beach VA, San Diego CA Bremerton WA, Everett WA, Pearl Harbor HI, Mayport FL & Yokosuka Japan. DepartmentOur services in the Defense business unit support all branches of the U.S. military and the intelligence community. Our teams provide a variety of support services related to the maintenance and life cycle sustainment of US Navy, US Coast Guard and Customs and Border Patrol fielded C5I systems. We are focused on the design, systems engineering, project management, procurement, installation, training, testing, and field maintenance of these systems.
