Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC):
The MFLC Program was established to expand access to confidential counseling and reduce the barriers and stigma often associated with seeking counseling support. Due to past and present deployments of U.S. Military Service members to locations such as Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of world conflict, Military members and families may be subject to extreme stress. The stresses of Military life are complex, requiring a wide range of problem solving skills in areas such as: single parenting; child care; spousal employment; fluctuating Family income; frequent relocations; isolation from other extended Family members; child education; and children coping with the absence of a parent. The DoD recognizes these difficulties and is committed to providing the necessary counseling support.
The MFLC Program provides in-person, confidential, non-medical, counseling services in support of the MFLC program, to support all Active and Reserve component Military Service members and their Families, including severely injured Service members and their Families. The non-medical counseling services shall be provided by licensed or certified counselors.
Non-medical Counseling Services: The MFLC counseling modalities consist of individual, family, couples, and groups. Services are delivered “just in time,” when and where they are needed using a “walk around/coaching” approach. MFLC counseling services are confidential.
• MFLCs will go to where the people are instead of waiting for people to schedule an appointment to see them, but an appointment can be made if desired. Counseling may be provided outside the gates of installations, nearest the communities in which families live and socialize.
• MFLCs will provide counseling support which assists Service members and their families with issues including, but not limited to the following: mobilization, deployment, reunion, frequent relocations, relocation adjustment, relationships, deployment stress, marital/couples issues, family relationships, serious illness, parenting, child care, parent/child communications, loss and grief, conflict resolution, self-esteem/independence, decision making, anxiety, stress, assertiveness, work life balance, anger, caregiver peer to peer forums, relationship issues, homesickness
• MFLCs will utilize a psycho-educational counseling approach which teaches Service members and their families how to anticipate and to address challenges/problems. Family psycho-education includes teaching coping strategies and problem-solving skills to families, friends, and/or caregivers to help them cope more effectively.
• MFLCs must be knowledgeable of the resources available through Military OneSource and of family advocacy and other support programs on and off installations to make referrals for counseling and access additional resources when circumstances warrant.
• MFLC will conduct warm hand-off of Service members and families to other providers and community/DoD resources, such as Military One Source (MOS).
• MFLCs will organize and facilitate voluntary peer-to-peer forums as requested to provide non-medical counseling to caregivers, interacting as necessary with installation
• MFLCs communicate with Regional Supervisors and participate in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information regarding trends and issues on the installations to which they are assigned.
• MFLCs will coordinate consultations with Commanders or with another provider or staff (Family Center Director, chaplain, Principal, School Liaison Officer, teacher, Camp Director etc.) about how to enhance resiliency, conducting briefings and presentations, or providing referral resources to a participant outside the context of a counseling session.
MFLC Rotations Available: General Rotation, Embedded Rotation, Recruiting Rotation, Surge-Active Duty, Surge- National Guard/Reserves, On-Demand-General.
Master’s degree from an accredited graduate program in a Mental Health related field such as Social Work, Psychology, Marriage/Family Therapy, or Counseling; a valid unrestricted counseling license/certification from a State, the District of Columbia, a U.S. Commonwealth, or a U.S. Territory that grants authority to provide counseling services as an independent practitioner in their respective fields; and demonstrated counseling competence preceding their employment with the MFLC Program. Specialized Work Experience and Training: working with Family programs and/or advocacy services, Military or civilian social service agencies, and/or are a Military Family member with full understanding of the Military lifestyle.
Possess advocacy knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: Working knowledge of Military, state, federal, and local resources; Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for Service members and their Families; Ability to develop trusting helping relationships; Ability to work effectively with individuals and Families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; Ability to intervene in crisis situations, using sound professional judgment, ethical practice, and common sense. Work independently to develop, implement, and evaluate safety and intervention plans to meet individual and Family needs; Ability to work cooperatively with Military and civilian medical, social service, law enforcement, and legal personnel on behalf of Service members and their Families. Must be a U.S. citizen, and must speak fluent English.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrates effective needs assessment and individual/small group training skills; Interpersonal skills: Understands group dynamics; demonstrates self-awareness as well as empathy/sensitivity to others. Oral/written communication skills: Communicates verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner, and effectively conveys ideas- Demonstrated effective and dynamic oral presentation and facilitation skills; Organizational skills: Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple priorities, illustrates attention to detail, and shows evidence of being conscientious regarding deadlines; Technical skills: Skill using appropriate software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, Outlook, and Power Point as well as data collection programs and basic automated skills.
Travel: Travel may be required in order to accomplish mission goals to include evenings and weekends with the ability to use all modes of transportation. This position requires access to US Government facilities and systems. US Citizenship, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance and reliable transportation to travel to assigned locations and nearby facilities is required.
Work Conditions: Flexibility to work non-standard hours as needed in order to properly serve and assist clients. Work is generally performed in a normal office environment where there is minimal exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions; Job assignments may require working at client site where working conditions may vary.
